The Photographer's Challenge

10. unique

Tenth day and one third through the challenge. Today’s word was “unique” which should be somewhat easier to find than some the earlier words.

November

For the November shot I went to Amager next to the big open sport area Kløvermarken. The exact location was placed in a garden association (haveforening) and when I arrived there was a locked gate in the way for me to enter into the area. This way I was not able to reach the precise location.

I wanted to make the best of it and saw a handmade wooden sign hanging over the gate into the garden association. I thought that this fitted pretty well for “unique” so I took the following photo.

December

In December I went for a stroll with my wife in the park Søndermarken in Frederiksberg. I was on the lookout for a wooden sign and it didn’t take long to find one.

In the south end of the park, there is a small restaurant called Bjælkehuset (the log house). It has a small gate facing the park with a wooden sign – just like the garden association. I setup up to take a photograph which unfortunately was in strong backlight, but there wasn’t much to do, because the sun was so low and I had to take the photo from that side. You can see the photograph below. Notice the black dot behind the tree over the right side of the gate; this is the sun which is so bright and overexposed, that the photo turns from white to black.

Comparison

Both photographs are backlit and the signs don’t really stand out the way they were supposed to. This is due to my small experience with the camera and the fact that I didn’t have any way to control the lighting before doing the exposure.

The composition is quite different between the two shot, the first with the sign close and low in the frame and the second with the sign farther away and in the middle.

Come back tomorrow and see the photos from the second third of the challenge.
