11. crevice

Today’s word was “crevice” and while I was going to a residential neighbourhood in Amager rather than an American national park, I was going to have to think outside the box again to get my shot.

November

In November I was led to Amager in a quiet area with a lot of villas; very residential and with very little nature and rocks, so a place where you would typically find big crevices. I was not quite sure how to photograph a “crevice”.

After a short while I look down at the ground and I saw how to make my shot; the sidewalk was filled with cobblestones with some space between each stone. Taking a macro photo from the side should have it look like a big crack between two rocks; a crevice. I took the photograph below.

December

In December the task of recreating the shot seemed easy enough, as most of the city has places with cobblestones. I wanted to do something a little different, so I went down to the backyard of my apartment.

Here we had a small wall between the actual yard and a small hill of soil next to the building. The wall was made of bricks and some them with more space between them than others. I took the photograph below, which sadly got a bit of camera shake as the low light result in a long exposure.

Comparison

The two photographs are visually very different but thematically they are quite similar. The light and the colours are very different, light and warm in the first, dark and cold in the second, and the composition and distance to subject as well.
