26. investment

Day 26 of the challenge and with today’s word “investment” I was going creative especially in my recreation photo.

November

In November I was sent to Amager in the northern part still close to the city centre. The word “investment” gave me different associations for my subject; a bank, an expensive car or a big elaborate house. Arriving at the location, I found none of these things.

I realised that my associations all were way too materialist and capitalist when I spotted the building on the other side of the road. It was a school and even though all the pupils were inside I sensed the learning environment from across the road. I knew that this subject would make much more sense for “investment” than any car or house would ever. I took the following photo.

December

In December on Boxing Day I was still spending my time at my parents’ house. Even though they live relatively near some schools, I didn’t want to use the time away from my family just to take a photo of an (to others) unknown school.

I have two six years old nieces, so my parents keep a bunch of toys in their house. I found some LEGO that my sister and I used to play with when we were kids, and I had an idea; instead of going to a school, I could create a classroom in LEGO and photograph that.

I began assembling the classroom with chairs, tables, and pupil, a teacher with a blackboard and even the teacher’s desk with some flowers. I had a really fun time being creative like when I was a kid, and actually ended up using more than an hour. When I felt satisfied with the result, I took a photograph, which you can see below.

After taking the photograph with my Instax camera, I broke my one-photo rule and took some additional photos with my DSLR camera also. I’m glad I did, because the polaroid turned out underexposed and out of focus, as they often do, so some of the details disappeared. At a later point I post the digital photos with more details here, so come back to check.

Comparison

The two photos don’t really compare visually, as I didn’t try to make a visual recreation. However, they still tell a story, and the first picture makes more sense in the company of the second, as it is not obvious that it’s a school unless you know the building.

Come back tomorrow for the some of the last photos of the challenge, and remember to take a look at my Instagram profile.
